No Away

Gather, sort, scour, mordant, dye, press, cut, mark, fold, stitch

An ongoing series of work repurposing textile waste from a local clothing designer-maker. No Away explores the idea of throwing things away and where that ‘away’ is, a kind of nowhere place, unseen and forgotten.

Linen offcuts are sorted by colour, with lighter colours hand dyed using madder, walnut and meadowsweet. Inspired by traditional patchwork and piecing techniques such as Korean jogakbo, the linen offcuts are hand-stitched together. Rather than concealing the stitches, they are visible, each stitch referencing the value of the materials and the time and energy taken to grow, harvest and process them.

‘No Away’ was shown as part of Cley21: Nowhere in July 2021.
